Another deal

As promised, in the effort to help people accurately document what I have sold, here's another deal announcement from Publishers Marketplace. Expect a couple more in the next few weeks... I've got a bunch of stuff in progress right now. =)

Congrats to the both of you. Good to see you have this posted on your website, too, James. Good luck wth 'Maze'.

I promise to purchase both books.

Thanks, guys, I'm totally excited. May I just say I worship the ground Jenny walks on? She has done a lot more for me recently than just get this book deal.

Shadow Mountain is a relatively new national imprint, but they've had some amazing success with their latest books. Check out fablehaven.com and leventhumps.com.

Mine will come out in Spring of 2008.

Can you tell I'm excited?

Kiwi, you can't buy it unless you let me sign it, which will mean you have to tell me who you are!

Jenny, thanks for the post!

Woo! Congrats, you two! (And Zoe, because I know cats are very helpful with these things, so congrats Zoe, too.) (And James's cat, if he has one.)

I just found this journal, so hello and congrats to both of you!

So, mostly I read this just to see what you're up to, but I have a question (since I'm not a writer person). What's a "nice deal?" Is it a good deal for everyone, or a process that didn't devolve into the throwing of rotten eggs? Missy and Tommy are interested as well...

Congratulations on your deal.

I enjoy reading your blog and I have a question that's probably really obvious, but I'll ask anyway. What is the difference between a synopsis and a summary? I know the summary is shorter, but I don't understand what each is supposed to include. Thank you.

"A nice deal" is agent code. It was devised by the founder of Publisher's Weekly so that agent types and other insiders would know how much money had been shelled out as an advance, but we mere writers aren't in on the secret :).

There's also "a very nice deal", which involves more money. Somewhere in the Secret Literary Agent Handbook it's all explained....

anonymous, here are the figures that are usually referred to when talking about book deals:

The Key
"nice deal" $1 - $49,000
"very nice deal" $50,000 - $99,000
"good deal" $100,000 - $250,000
"significant deal" $251,000 - $499,000
"major deal" $500,000 and up

sorry, that was in answer to Rachel's question, not anonymous.

Quick, someone hold Kiwi down; I'll requisition the handbook. There's secrets in there!

POWER TO THE PEOPLE, buffysquirrel, not imperialist apologists and perverters of history .. yeah, you know what I'm talking about. ;D

James, I'm tempted to rock up to one of your book signing, just for the hell of it ... Congrats again, mate, and hope to see Major deal with your name next to it soon enough.

Jenny, how is Zoe improving?

James Dashner said...

Why do you think I was so ecstatic when Jenny got them to double my advance from 50 cents to a dollar? So I could have "nice deal" by my name. :-)

Kiwi, from the word "up", we can now narrow down a little further where you live. We WILL figure you out eventually.

kiwi said...

I wish my agent could double my advance checks!

Squished, I tell you! Squished!

I just happened onto your blog. Congratulations. You're quite young to have such success. How many books have you placed with publishers and how have they done in the marketplace?
