Book Pimping Thread 2007

What follows below is an Amazon wish list that I've thrown together--its purpose is not to buy me books, but to show you some of the good stuff that's out there. It's present season, after all, and I'm sure many of you have people that love books. If you want to recommend or pimp a certain book, comment away!

This one may not be up your alley, Jenny, but some of your readers (or those for whom they're buying books) might like it:

Souvenir, by Therese Fowler, from Ballantine Books

From the review by Library Journal: "Fowler's debut is the heartbreaking story of a woman who made what she thought was a responsible decision, only to have to live with the consequences ... When Meg discovers she has amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), she knows she has only one chance to make peace with the past and give her daughter hope for the future. The choices made by Meg and Savannah may be controversial with some readers, but, nevertheless, this outstanding debut is recommended for all public libraries."

Full disclosure: I copyedited the manuscript and loved the story.

The books I've been pimping this year are Melusine by Sarah Monette (seriously one of the most inventive and absorbing fantasies I've ever read. The way she writes her city you can feel the grime on your skin.), Veniss Underground by Jeff Vandermeer (another atmospheric city book, but this time with a SciFi setting. Again, the writing and the depth blew my mind away.) and Paradise Kiss by Ai Yazawa, which is actually a manga, not a book, but it's smart, sexy and funny in a way I wish more chic lit was. I love it tons!

I have tons more, but my little reply is already not so little, so I will leave you with these.

Hope everyone's holidays are wonderful!

Russell Kirkpatrick's FIRE OF HEAVEN trilogy. Flying the flag for New zealand fantasy writers everywhere.

Well worth the read. :)
