The wings

It's a little known fact, but I'm in the process of growing wings. =)

Well, not really, but I have been having issues with my shoulders lately, due to the fibromyalgia, and it uncannily feels like wings are trying to burst through my shoulder blades. I'm a miracle of biological evolution, wouldn't you know?

So anyway, to keep "the wings" from sprouting, I get to go for some neat physical therapy, which partially involves splashing around in a pool. Which is splendid, except that I own exactly one bathing suit that fits, and no winter exercise clothes at all. And I have no idea where to find comfy exercise wear for people who are both fat and short.

Thus, I ask you, collective internet brain: any suggestions? =)

I'd probably try LLBean.com. They have a good selection of practical suits, and a 'how to choose' section on sizing, based on body measurements.

Board shorts and tankini top. Worked for me. 'Nuff said. :-)

What sort of stuff are you looking for? You should be OK with comfy shorts (even PJ shorts) and a T-shirt over a supportive bra. However, most shelf bras are terribly unsupportive so you need to double up. But Victoria's Secret sells sports bras that are correlated with real bra sizes...

Hi, Jenny!

You could try lululemon for your work-out wear. Their clothes are super comfortable. I think they were even featured on Oprah once for being stylish and slimming, yet practical. (oh dear. I sound like a commercial - but I love their stuff)

Here's the link to find a location:

Hope this helps.

I've been really happy with the swimsuits and workout wear from Junonia, especially when I can get stuff on sale there. Not just stuff that "fits ok" for a short but wider girl, but stuff that's actually made for that build, which I really appreciate.

That said, I know their sizes go up pretty high at the high end, but I have known some people who really wished they went down a size smaller or two at their smaller end -- I'm not sure if they carry anything smaller than a 14, or maybe a 12.

Old Navy

Land's End has great suits for every shape *and* for active swimming, not just lazing about on a beach. :)

I've had luck at Wal-Mart, although I try not to shop there. I don't want to add to the owners' wealth.

But they do carry a large selection of larger women's bathing suits.

Nothing at Old Navy comes in petite sizes. But their sweatpants come unhemmed so you can make them fit.

Eddie Bauer's website has EVERYTHING in petite sizes (for those who don't know, that means SHORT, not skinny), and most of that stuff also comes in extra-large.

And the dreaded *-Marts (Wal and K) sell exercise stuff for a low price. They've got shorts in stretch fabrics that are quite comfortable and suitable for exercising, and since they're shorts, it doesn't matter that they aren't petite.

As for swimsuits, some department stores will have them in stock for people going on winter vacations to the tropics. And the spring/summer collections should be available soon.
