Bonus contest!

And oh wow, I was so happy about announcing the existence of The Rappaport Agency that I forgot to mention the query contest!

The first 50 people to correctly answer this question will receive a personalized query rejection (or acceptance) from my assistant, Jodi Meadows. They were so popular that we figured we'd do them again! You should just put in a sentence before the formal query letter saying "The answer to the contest question is [answer]."

And the contest question is: What type of horror does Jenny Rappaport not like?

(Hint: The answer can be found on the new agency website, in the submission guidelines.)

Hello! I've been going through your archives and found the previous query letter contest. We're not supposed to copy and paste the query letter in your "Comments" section, are we?

Good morning! I just wanted to thank you for the interview yesterday, and congratulate you again on opening your own agency. You are very friendly and personable, and easy to talk to, which helped ease the nervousness I always feel in an in-person pitch. Thanks for that. It's very nice to put a live face to the blog.

I was reviewing your submission guidelines. I'm assuming that for partial requests, you still do not want attachments, so I will paste what you requested into the body of my email. If that is incorrect, please let me know.

I already have four with the correct answer. Only 46 spots to go! :P

Hmm... I know the answer, but I got a critique before. ;)

The query letter should be sent via the normal route. The new guidelines, along with new query e-mail address, can be seen at www.rappaportagency.com.

Lisa, attachments are fine for partials and full manuscripts, but it doesn't matter which way you sent it after the pitch session.

Well, I blew that one. Who knew that the tab key sent the email.
Rats! Stupid machine.

Jodi Meadows said...

Julie, I have your query here. It has the right answer. Did you mess up somewhere else? Send it again if you want, and I'll delete this one.

Lisa Iriarte said...

Thanks for the instructions, Jenny. I'll attach it, then.

Hi Jodi,
You've made my day! I was so excited about the opportunity to send a query - I wasn't sure if you wanted only the query, or query+synopsis+five pages. I was moving something on the email, (I had no idea TAB would send the darn thing)and hadn't added the synopsis and five pages the submission page stated. I have resent it, avoiding the TAB key.

Thanks so much,

Julie

Julie, not a problem! Computers have minds of their own, you know. Any key could be THAT key.

Congratulations on the agency, Jenny. I would take part in your contest, but I already sent a query to you recently.

Justus M. Bowman said...

Wait...did my query go to the old agency? Should I resubmit?

Jodi Meadows said...

Justus, I've answered all the queries from the old email address. (All but a couple, and yours isn't one of the ones sitting in my inbox.) If you haven't received a reply, first check your spam filter in case my reply was eaten, and that you sent to the correct address. (Jenny's old address, as opposed to Lori's address.)

If you've already received a reply, I'd prefer you not resubmit your query.

If I recognize queries from recently, trying to take advantage of the contest, I'll probably disqualify them in order to give new queriers a chance at the personalized response.

Justus M. Bowman said...

Jodi,

I most likely sent my query to jrlperkinsagency@yahoo.com, which I think was the proper address at the time. I've checked my spam filters to the best of my ability, but I don't see a reply from you.

It's no big deal if you didn't respond. Agents are busy people. I'll continue to read and enjoy Lit Soup, but I have a question to ask.

If I take my book through one more full revision in an attempt to make it irresistible, can I resubmit? If not, that's fine, but I'm hoping you say yes.

Don't worry about me cheating in the contest. Cheating bores me. Bring on the challenge!

Justus, I don't have a query from you in my records. Go ahead and send one to the new address.

Jenny Rappaport said...

Justus, I'll hop in and say that I don't have a query from you either. So the chances are that it never got through.

Justus M. Bowman said...

Jenny,

That's displeasing. It's hard enough to beat the odds without the Internet against me.

I queried you at the new address, so I hope it gets through. If I have to get rejected, a personalized rejection is tough to beat.

Thanks for having the contest,

Justus

Were we supposed to send just the query, or the query/synopsis/five pages?

I sent the query alone first, reconsidered, and sent the lot. If I was mistaken, feel free to ignore the second email from me. Unless, of course, you like it. ;)

rhienelleth said...

Ooops. I put the answer to the question at the end of my query. I hope that still counts.

I wish I could send you a query at this time, but I'm in the middle of splitting up my 115K YA manuscript--unless of course you'd be interested in taking a look anyway. I was just thinking that with the "shorter for YA is better" theory it would be a good way to go, but...

I have a query I could send for the novel as it stands at present, if you would like to take a look. The feedback you offer is invaluable.

Splatterpunk!

Neal said...

Clearly, Jenny does not like Splatterpunk. So no grasping the blood splurting limbs to bash the next person that submits one of those to you.

By the way this is an excellent way to get the website viewed. I passed on the information to the Garden State Horror Writers in case some of them missed your blog entries this week.

Jodi Meadows said...

In case anyone is still checking this, I've received over fifty queries with the correct answer to the question. No more queries will receive personalized responses as of this point: 1:58PM EST

Thanks everyone for playing! Jenny will have an official announcement as soon as she has access to a computer.

Vicki said...

Jenny and staff major congrats on the new agency. Looks like I missed being counted in the 50 by a couple of hours.

You'll see the answer at the top of the query since I read the comments after hitting send. :)
